Edible Water Beads for Tactile Play

Posted on Feb 21, 2015 by Bertie's Blankets

I have bought commercial water beads in the past for Bertie to play with. The brightly coloured slippery little balls of gel were great fun to play with but I worried about him eating them (even though he has never really put anything in his mouth)! After a bit of research I have come across mini edible (non toxic if ingested) water beads you can easily make at home. You need basil seeds (also known as tukmaria & sabja and have a host of health benefits) which can be bought from Amazon. You simple put 1 Tbsp seeds, 1 & 1/4 cups of water and some food colouring into a bowl.  Give an occassional stir and the seeds will start to absorb the water and swell. When you are ready to play with them just add more water. Please note that the beads will stick to fabric, therefore best to wear an apron or no clothes! They provide hours of tactile & exploratory play.
