Baby boxes have been in the news today as a pilot baby box project is being launched this month at Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea Hospital in London, in collaboration with the US company, Baby Box Co. I would have loved to receive one when Bertie was born.
The article by Vanessa Barford, BBC News Magazine can be read here: Why babies all over the world are now sleeping in boxes
For over 75 years Finland has been giving new parents a maternity box as a way to help each newborn have an equal start in life. The boxes contain many useful items such as clothes, nappies, blankets, toys etc. The cardboard box itself can even be used as baby's first bed (mattress included). One of the greatest things about the baby boxes is that they have helped Finland to achieve one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the World. Since the program began Finland's infant mortalty rate has decreased from 10 per cent of babies dying before the age of one to just 0.3 per cent.
Baby boxes based on the original Finnish ones can be purchased from numerous businesses around the world.
A Bertie's Blanket swaddle blanket would be an ideal addition to a baby box!
